What should exaust temperture be? UPDATE

I have a 2005 f250 with a 5.4l 3v engine. I have noticed the temp of the exaust manifold is hotter on the right side. Shooting the manifolds with a temp gun, I am seeing about 175 deg. on the driver side and about 375 deg. on the passenger side. I took the reading after about 5 minutes with the engine at idle. I am not sure which side is correct. Anyone know what it should be and/or what might be causing the difference? The cats have been removed.

Thanks

Wow. Can't help, but that sure is interesting. After driving for a while do the temps even out?

The temps always have a big difference from one side to the other even after driving. It seems the right side is about 150 deg. hotter at all times.

Got any restrictions on the hotter side? Sharp bends, smaller diameter pipe, crushed pipe, etc? Engine running rough? Misfiring on cooler side? How many miles? Could have injector/injectors going bad. Really just guessing here though.

sounds like a weak plug, coil, or injector on the cold side.
exhaust should be in the 400* range in the combustion chamber, so 375 is reasonable.
does the engine run rough at all?
shake at idle?

you could also have an exhaust leak pulling air in and cooling the exhaust manifold i guess.

something is definitely wrong though.

Stock exaust pipes, no dammage. The engine does run rough but I do not get a misfire code. I am getting a cam sensor code on the cold side. Changed the sensors but didn't help. When driving it looses power around 2500 rpms and engine starts rattling the valves. I installed new plugs on the cold side but no change. It has 111000 miles.

Yes the engine runs rough and shakes. Would just one plug or injector cause the temp to be that low or would it be multiples? I don't think there are any exaust leaks. I pulled the plugs and the hot side plugs were kinda brown looking as if they were burning fuel correctly. The cold side plugs were black with soot. I put new plugs in the cold side and after driving about 20 miles I pulled them out and they looked new. May need to drive more. The cam position sensor on the cold side throws a code. I changed the sensor but it didn't help. If there was a problem with the sensor circuit could it cause that side to be cold?

2005 5.4's can have bad injectors - bad enough that Ford extended the warranty on them out to 120,000mi. If you can, read your fuel trims that will give you an idea if an injector is stuck. I would think you would be getting a misfire code though but maybe it's not totally stuck.

Left timing chain loose.

I think I may have found something. I am not familiar with the overhead cams but when I removed the valve cover on the cold side, the timing chain was very loose. I know it has a tensioner to keep it tight but does it stay tight at all times or is it possible for it to relax when the engine is not running? I checked the other side and it seems to be tight. I just would like to get someones input before I tear it down.

Thanks

Update for anyone interested.

This is what I found. The left timing chain has been loose enough to jump time. I counted a 9 tooth jump. Some how it did not damage the valves. The chain itself had streched and the tensioner could not keep it tight. I think it was caused by a bad tensioner which let the chain climb up the crank gear durring start up. I replaced both tensioners and chains and re-timed. All previous codes gone, engine runs great. I did get one new code that I am going to research and probably start a new thread for it. When I checked the exaust temp it puzzled me. Both sides are the same around 250 deg. The hot side came down and the cold side went up. I don't understand how the bad timing on the left side made the temp increase on the right side. Anyway, I want to thank eveyone for the input.
