keep in mind this is for JOHN DEERE ENGINES would not do in your pickup engine. but here it is........ using the figure from 84 6.9's post.
500 / 10 = 50
50 x 1500 = 75,000 miles
When used in John Deere engines with John Deere oil filters, drain intervals may increase 500 hours. See your dealer for specific application details.
Oil and Lubricants : Plus-50 II 15W-40 Engine Oil
And I top off once a week with either a quart of Carquest 15w-40, Napa 15w-40, or even Traveller 15w-40 from Tractor Supply.
I just try to keep it topped off, and I dont exactly have a light right foot either. 70% of my driving is WFO throttle and most times each gear sees the engine governor....
My engine burns a quart a week, geez my $900 truck isn't worth the best oil LOL
quart a week, holy **** man, im surprised you arent using used oil from the junkyard. lol.
My sister's Jeep is worse. The 258 Inline 6 oil dipstick is a thick white/black/chocolate milshake/and rust substance that doesn't even wipe off. Somehow it still runs and leaks oil out of every gasket there is...matter of fact, it's been doing that for 2 years now. We just top it off with un-filtered waste oil from the drain pan from my Dad's truck (15w-40 for his 7.3 PSD), or we did some un-filtered ATF from when we flushed my Dad's auto trans, or we've even used power steering fluid. I don't know how the thing still runs, because we haven't even checked it for at least 5 months. Probably just the shot head gasket using the antifreeze to lube the bearings. YUM! I'd top it off, but it'll all leak out within 2 days, so we just shurg our shoulders and say..."Let's see how long it lasts"

So I consider my rig to be in decent shape, when compared to the Jeep LOL
What can I say? We are "try-our-best-do-it-yourselfers" LOL
My Dad drove truck from Hartford, CT down to NYC back in the mid-80's when he graduated High School. Yep, they had 84-86 era F350 6.9/4 speeds with a 12' enclosed freight box. He said the small freight company didn't have a lot of money, and the trucks had high miles (200-300k each), so they'd run them like they stole them delivering freight 6 days a week and maybe they would change the oil every 15k miles, or if cash was tight, they'd extend it another week until they could afford the oil and filter. My favorite story is when my Dad picked up an airplane engine from Pratt and Whitney in Hartford. They loaded 1 engine in the back of his F350. He said the thing was squatting BIG TIME. He ran it like he stole it, he said he couldn't get the truck into 4th gear because the RPM's were too low. So he hammered down in 2nd and 3rd and just kept the RPM's way up and he said it drove great! When he left that freight company, they were still running those trucks.
I checked my filter, the sharpie marker has been burned off the filter and is not read-able. So I checked my records. My last oil change was 7-16-10 @ 105,141 miles. Today is 3-22-11 and the truck has 119,531 miles. Maybe I'll change it next week, maybe I won't. I have no oil leaks, and I replaced the head gaskets last winter. The cylinders had no scores and were shiny, so my rings probably needs replacement. Ah well, I'm just gonna run it like I stole it for another 150k miles until I make enough money with this truck to build a replacement engine and swap it in.
All I can say is that with the above testimonies, I personally feel that high-quality this and that doesn't matter...at the end of the day, the bearings are still getting lubed with oil and as long as it's changed every so often...it'll be OK. Not GREAT, but it'll survive.
they will run with low oil (for a while anyway not forever) and dirty oil but why chance messing things up..... unnecessary risk if you ask me....

I can tell you right know, when I build my Turbo'd 6.9 for the '65...it's gonna get the same Carquest or Napa brand 15w-40 and get driven just as hard as my 85, maybe harder. With the turbo...most likely harder. The only difference is that I'll change it when I'm supposed to. A 5k pound F150 shortbed with a cool 65 body, running a studded, turbo'd, moose'd 6.9 with a ZF5....I won't be able to keep my foot out of the floor.
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts

Truck might run a little better, hard to tell, no huge difference. It sounds better at idle though.
Just following up, letting everybody know that if they don;t change their oil at 5,001 miles...1 mile over the recommended oil change isn't gonna hurt anything.
Although, if you have an engine in good shape, I don't think I would run your truck the way I run mine
I'm just sharing my experience because some people baby these engines, and they really shine when they get abused. I swear, it runs better the harder I push it...just sayin' is all....
