Im trying to reinstall the Harmonic Balancer on the crankshaft. I've run into 2 problems:
1. i cant keep the crankshaft still, the engine is still in the car. is there a way to immobilize the crankshaft without removing the engine?
2. The harmonic balancer installer tools i am finding, are not going to work to get it back on. They dont have a long enough bolt to reach all the way through the balancer to get onto the crankshaft. is there a specialized tool for this VERY deep balancer?
If you have the room, you might be able to drop the service cover off the bellhousing and use a flexplate/flywheel gear locking tool. You can find them in a lot of auto parts places...
They also make them where you pull off the starter, insert the tool into the hole; it mates with the teeth and bolts up like the starter would. I can't find a picture of that, but a lot of auto parts places sell those tool.
...or you can pull out the starter and jam a block of wood in there. That's worked for me in the past.
You can get a lenght of hardened threaded rod, a few washers and a two nuts... bottom the threaded rod out in the crank, put the balancer on, then the big washers and a nut and start cranking it... Once it's on far enough to use the installer tool (or run all the way onto the crank in this manner), back the second nut onto your original nut and remove the threaded rod.
Im thinking my best option here to to reassemble everything, tow it to the shop and have them put the balancer on. I'll explore options as the time for it arrives. I didnt realize the balancer was going to be such an issue, should have seriously considered pulling the engine to do this job
