302 that vibrates
302 that vibrates
I have a 302(D4DE) that vibrates. The number on the crankshaft is 2MA, with a flywheel number of D7TE and a D2OE harmonic balancer. I'am under the impression that a 2MA crankshaft needs the 28oz inbalance flywheel and harmonic balancer which going by the casting numbers I have. I've tried a new balancer but the engine still vibrates. This engine is in a 65 f-100 2WD, three speed on the column. Many hours have been spent under and over this old truck trying to find this problem. This use to be fun work when I was a kid but when your 65 its hard work. Anyone have any ideas about this vibration problem. Thanks James Northen
it sounds like you might have the wrong flywheel. maybe its for a straight 6 or something that would unbalance your motor. if the motor has all 70s rotating assembly or pre H.O. 302 than it needs the 28 oz imbalance.

Thanks for comenting on my vibrating problem. I think I will try another flywheel even tho one on it is a 28oz imbalance. Pictures I've seen of the28oz and the 50oz flywheels show that the cast-in imbalance is much larger on a 50oz. My flywheel just might have had too many resurface jobs due to the replacement of clutches. As long as I get the same diameter and the same number of teeth and stay in 70's it should be a 28oz. Thanks again James

The engine has always vibrated from the day I bought the truck. The vibrations did get worse after I replaced the clutch and had the flywheel resurfaced. The man who resurfaced the flywheel said it had no hot spots and only needed light sanding to remove the glazed surface.

Six cylinder flywheels are neutral meaning that they have no imbalance. This flywheel does have a built-in imbalance. If you look at the back-side of oem flywheels you will see that it is dished in. The dished-in area on a six cylinder flywheel is smooth all the way around where as on eight cyclinder flywheels a portion of the dished area is filled-in from the casting. The 50oz flywheels have a larger area filled in compared to 28oz. The engine does vibrate all the time tho it is worst at different rpm's.

Yes I have replaced the harmonic balancer with a brand new one from Advance Auto. I thought about maybe the old one had slipped just as you have. The dash is vibrating and so is the steering wheel. Going by the casting no. on the flywheel(D7TE-GA) it is the correct one for my 2MA crankshaft. Sometime in the next 2 to 3 weeks I'am going to replace the flywheel with a new one and if it still vibrates this 302 will start a new life as a boat anchor.
Is it possible that the problem is not flywheel/balancer related but a timing /plug wire issue ? Does it make good power? You said earlier that it varied with rpm and If it's a balance issue it should just get worse as the rpm increases and shouldn't vary.
The engine runs good and makes plenty of power and also will idle with no vibration. While the engine is idleing if you lightly tap on the gas pedal you can feel vibration in the steering wheel as the rpm goes up. AS you go throu each gear you can feel vibrations at certain rpm. In high gear on the highway there is no vibration until your speed gets to 55mph and continues through 63mph and then it smoothes out. I've have also installed new motor mounts.
Someone at the other ford site said to install a equalizer pipe between my dual exhause somewhere before the mufflers and it would take the vibrations out. Ever here anyone doing that?
