HOW MUCH OIL DOES THESE IDI'S HOLD IM GETTING READY TO DO MY FIRST OIL CHANGE. ANYTHING OTHER LITTLE TIDBITS I MIGHT NEED TO KNOW WOULD BE COOL TO. THANKS.
The 7.3L is 10-12qts. you should do the oil filter while your at it, if you decide to do it get a good brand for the oil filter not cheap knock off one and you are going to need a oil filter wrench you can get them at walmart or any auto parts store , hope this helps with your fist oil change.
Edit: while your draining the oil check to make sure there is no coolant in the oil because it could mean cavitation , and make sure you
put oil in that is for a diesel engine like shell's rotellaT oil, the oil for a diesel truck is diffrent than gass engine oil
NEVER USE A FRAM FILTER they are junk get a wix/napa gold or a motorcraft and ask for one for a 95 powerstroke they are bigger so you can add more oil look at this before you buy your oil http://www.turbodieselregister.com/TDR57_Oil.pdf
and now is the time to clean your cdr
10qts with the idi filter 11 with the powerstroke filter. Just know that these filters need to be put on tight like 11/2 to 2 turns after the gasket contacts the base. Otherwise it wil loosen and drain your oil. You may need a wrench to do that get one with a handle that swivels. You may also want to drain the filter first by sending a punch through it with a hammer otherwise the oil from the oil cooler (the thing the filter screws on) runs down the outside of the filter and coats your hand.
Hello fordhorse....What make Fram Oil Filters junk? I've never heard that before. Did they go bubblegum and get on the minimum standards bandwagon or what? Tell us....Everyone would like to know what makes 'em junk. Will they ruin our engines? Do they leak? Do they shed filter material that tears up bearings? Do they magically change the properties of the oil? Just what makes 'em junk?
frams quality is very bad have you seen the inside of one there is very little filter media and they don't do a good job of filtering if your lucky you can run them and your oil just isn't as clean as it could be but if you have the luck i do you will learn the hard way that the filter can collapse and fall apart causing you to lose oil presser i lost a low mile 400 this way so i always run wix i was thinking of trying a motorcraft this time but im not sure i may cut one open first

Hey fordhorse...thanks for clarifying that. I just bought a Fram TG3786 oil filter, but I waited to put it on until I found out about Fram's. I have never used one...I always used Motorcraft, but none was in stock so I got the Fram Tough Guard. It is supposed to be 6X better than regular oil filters. I know some snake oil is out there with those kinds of claims, but was willing to try it. Since I tow alot I don't think I want to take a chance a get what happened to you. I looked inside the thing and it does seem a little light on filter material, but there is a metal mesh holding in the filter media.
your welcome im just glad i could help stop someone from making the mistake i did
To tell you the truth...it seems as though my memory wants to say that I have heard of Fram Filters coming apart inside before...Anyway...I am going to go about 30 miles away and just get a Motorcraft...but first take this Fram back and get my 15 bucks back.
