It is a very course screen so I am not sure why you would bother.

If I type fast enough I might be the first to get this answer out there. Check out Guzzle's write up of the "Hutch Mod" It's about the only way to handle the pickup screen and tube so you never have to worry about it again.

Welcome to guzzle's In-tank Hutch Mod Web Page

I left mine off. My 3/8 pickup tube is within 1/4 inch of the tanks bottom.

The (black) foot can split and fall apart (mine was in pieces). If that happens you loose the screen anyway.

I helped a fellow member do the Hutch mod about a month ago. The foot in his Excursion's fuel tank had broken off at the clamp. He was having fuel problems when the level dropped below 1/4 tank. We just added enough 3/8" tubing to get it to about 1/8-3/16" from the bottom and left the double flare on that end. He already had the Dahl filter between the tank and fuel pump.
Be sure, if you eliminate the foot/screen, to add a filter of some kind before the fuel pump.
