I have dual tanks, front steel tank pump stopped working. Is it a big deal to drop tank and replace fuel pump and or fuel pump with sending unit ?
Do you need any special tools ? I assume the lines are flexible to the top of the tank, and top of tank has some type of twist off to put fuel pump in ? Any advice appreciated
Found it much easier to lift off the bed. My short bed had 6 mounting bolts and 2 rear lighting connectors and it was off. With bed out of the way, you can stand next to the tank and replace pump. Easy splicing in new pump too. You do need a special fuel line removal tool but they are available at every part store. Fuel line removal is easier with bed removed than trying to reach above tank from a creeper.

Reason: added tool info
I agree with Jimbo. Mesing with the tank under the truck is one major PIA. Pluse you don't have to drain the tank, or worry about spilling gas everywhere.
I have 8 ft bed with 8ft metal tool boxes and ladder racks. Would be major job and would have to use a forklift to get boxes off as tool boxes are welded to rack.
So basically I just need the tool to remove or disconnect fuel lines ? The tool for fuel filters ?
Tank already drained , needed 6 feet of 1/2 " vinyl tube and siphon I got from Harbor Freight.
Drained forward tank, lowered to try to replace gasket (o ring) and then realized had to disconnect anti-siphon hose (pita). Lowered tank only a foot or so before fuel lines stretched as far as they could. Had trouble with disconnect tool. Gave up and removed bed. Sorry I dont have any tips for removing tank from bottom cause I gave up.
Thanks for info, sounds like a real pita, at least back tank works but they are both original pumps so I'm afraid the other one will go soon. Rather get the front tank fixed before the rear craps out.
My truck has about 290k miles on it. The front pump went out last summer. The rear is still original.
I didn't find dropping the front tank to be all that bad. Its just awkward. Its just the two bolts on the two straps. I removed the front strap and left the rear strap hanging. Releasing the lines is a bit of a pain. I use the individual round plastic release tools. Its easier to get them in all the way. Then there is the filler neck and breather hose to disconnect and thats it. The filler can be difficult to disconnect from the tank.
It definitely helps to have an extra pair of hands though. I just used a floor jack to lower it down.
I suggest getting a Motorcraft fuel pump instead of and Airtex or similar generic one.

I used nylon hold down straps that have the handy ratchet mechanism on them when I replaced the rear tank on my 1992 F350 a few years ago.

I have around 230k, have an airtex, but am taking it back, keep hearing not to use it. Everyone has suggested stock or bosch with sending unit attached.
