Code Reader?

First off let me appoligize for putting this in the wrong area. I wasn't sure where it belonged and I feel comfy in this forum!

With the recent problems I had with my truck, I have decided I want a code reader. I want it to read codes and also be able to clear codes or clear the computer of the truck, what ever that is called! LOL

I have a 99 F350 SD, wondering what is a good code reader for that? I am wanting to spend up to 300 dollars on one, but cheaper would be better. LOL, but I don't want so cheap that it won't be able to do the things I want it too.

Mods, please feel free to move this, if need be!

Oh, and I did a search but it kind of gave me tuners too, don't want a tuner, just a code reader with a clear function!!

Thanks,
Kim

Here is the one I have. Although, this link is to an Ebay auction, I bought mine at Walmart. It was around 100 bucks. It seems to work pretty good. I'm sure you will find one for the price range you are looking at.

What about this one? It looks like it would give a word description of the problem as well as the code.

The one I have does that also. I would think a lot of them do that now. That looks like a good price. You should Google it, and look for reviews.

Thanks, I did google it and have been reading up on it. I think I am going to go to some stores tomorrow to see what they have on hand. Then I can better decide if I want to go with an ebay one or buy local.

I'd go with a ScangaugeII. It reads codes as well as provide some useful gauges as well. It gives you the transmission temperature which I believe you don't have one on your instrument cluster.

What motor do you have? Do you have a laptop? Auto Enginuity is a great scan tool, at a great price, especially if your rig is a diesel because the diesels are not OBDII compliant.

And here's a video of its powers in action. Thanks to Ken(Woodnthings)

I always forget something! LOL It's a V10

I really would like a stand alone scanner. I don't want to have to take my computer out to the truck or car or what ever. That is another thing, I want one I could use on other car/trucks besides my truck.

I found some at Sears, that are also on Ebay, so I can at least go look at them in person. Although, I am thinking of one of these two.

So many to choose from and no clue how good they are. LOL

The first one you listed is the one I bought about two years ago on ebay. I use it on my V-10 truck on my 6.0L truck and on my wifes toyota. It does the job for the money. When I take long trips I just leave it plugged in and monitor some of the things going on. I have never had a problem with it and I have had several times when I was glad it was plugged in while driving the diesel and got a check engine light. It takes the worry out of what is going on.

Well, I emailed the seller on the "Updatable" reader and he said it will not work on a 99 Ford F350 Super Duty. I did forget to tell him it was a gasoline style motor though. I will stay away from that one for now anyway. I wan't to make sure the one I buy will work on the truck.

Now I'm leaning toward the OBD 2 CAN one in that first link. At least I know that one of you use is on a V10!!

Buy a Scangauge II. It will work on any vehicle you plug it into. It will clear codes. It will also display 4 different gauges at once. Go to Scangauge.com and check it out. They are 160 bucks.

I went to Sears today and looked at a Craftsmen and an Actron. I really liked the "Code Connect" feature of the Actron. I also liked the lights for the emissions on the Craftsmen. After much contemplating I went with the Actron.

Sears had them on sale for 199.00 I bought mine at Amazon and even paying for the one day shipping, it only came to 170! Yah, I'm inpatient like that! Besides, figured I was still saving money even though I paid extra for the shipping! LOL

Thanks again for all the suggestions. It gave me things to look at and compare too. The main reason I went with the Actron was because I figured they sell it at Sears, so it has to be somewhat of a good product. Even though some of you had the ebay models, I decided I would go with one that was more readily available in a normal store. Hope I made the right decision. I will let you all know how I like it once I have time to play with it!
