We had an engine fire in our 95 F350 EFI 460 5spd. Shut off the truck and 20 min later had the neighbors beating on the door to tell us it was on fire. I figure something bad in the electrical. It got burnt up pretty good but were gonna try and get it going again. My question is what parts on a EFI 460 are interchangable with other Ford parts. For instance, the TPS should be the same as the ones on most other Ford cars from those years. I have a whole top end for a 5.0 mustang with alot of similar looking sensors to what were on his truck. I'm curious to see if ill be able to use some of them on the 460.
I think the injectors for a 460 are 24lbs? And can i use a distributor off of something else like a 400? also, is the brake booster specific to the F350 or will an f250 one be the same?
Was it just the wireing burnt up or more things melted like plastic and hoses? Best thing to do is hit a junk yard and get what you need from another 460 of same year.
I delt with a burnt up engine bay once and it was not fun. Had to basicly rebuild the top end of engine as the gaskets were dammaged(head up) and all wireing and sensors and anything else that was dammaged. What made it nice the guy got a wrecked car that had everything needed.
As a side note, did you get the recall about the cruse control fix Ford had? This has caused fires before.
Everything under the hood burn up. It melted all the hoses except the lower radiator hose. The whole engine harness is shot, the fuse box is partially melted, battery melted, solenoid and started leads are gone. It melted pretty much all the plastic. Brake booster has a hole in it and the fluid reservoir on the master cylinder is gone, melted 5 or 6 injectors and the distributor cap. Its pretty bad. We want to try and fix it though because a 5spd 460 is pretty hard to come by with 100k on it. All the 460s pickups at the local junk yards have the drive train stripped and most of the harnesses are cut up. I've been pouring over craigslist to try and find a parts truck but efi harnesses for 460 are like gold around here
I havent heard about the recall but im VERY interested. Our truck has cc and maybe thats what caused it in the first place. Our plan is to just take out all the un needed vaccum lines, smog stuff, heater/ac stuff etc because we dont have emissions in Franklin county. It should be relatively easy if we can find a new harness and fuse block. It also melted some of the passenger side headlight wiring so we might have to repair some of the chassis wiring too.
Im just wondering what kind of parts I can use off other ford cars/trucks because like i said, 460 parts are kind of scarce, especially efi
Holy cow. If it we're me Id buy a donar truck and do a complete swap. But even that you might have electrical issues. Maybe time to find another truck? Similar but diesel? Gas prices goin up.
I've dealt with burnt rigs before and they are not fun... Hot fires will also cook stuff on the inside of the fire wall sometimes too..
I think a donor is a good idea too... or you could part yours out, shoot your running gear is worth an an easy $1500 bucks and people would line up to buy it.. then you have the body and other parts too.... Around here their giving away pretty decent 7.5L 250s and 350s in our years for 5-6k.....I bought a nice 96 crew cab short bed XLT with a lift, new engine, fresh rebuilt tranny last year for $4500.. Just buying another truck and parting yours out would be easier IMO especially if you have to paint it..... Of course I would probably try to fix it too if it was my rig..
Sounds like the fire was hot enough to burn to the bottom. Better rebuild the engine and convert to carb since you have no smog testing. A dura spark 2 ignition system and carb will have minimal wireing to mess with. Other than that best to find a doner truck and start swapping.
Also better check the cab like the others have said. With a hot fire the firewall componets on the inside would melt too.
I havent heard about the recall but im VERY interested. Our truck has cc and maybe thats what caused it in the first place.
The recall number is 05S28-it deals with the redundant cruise control switch on the master cylinder shorting out, possibly leading to melted wiring and an engine fire.
THIS IS IMPORTANT!!
EVERYONE with a 90's Ford truck NEEDS to have this taken care of! Although very rare, engine fires can and do occur as a result of this. I know of one family who lost all of their posessions due to a house fire caused by the Expedition parked in their garage. If you don't know if your truck has had this recall done, take it to your local Ford dealer to have them check it out.
