I resently aquired a 1990 F-350 parts truck with a good running 460. I have not had much experience with the EFI 460's and was wondering if you guys could help.
1. What was the HP and TQ ratings of this year?
2. How do these rank as a 460EFI out of the years 88-97?
3. Do you guys think it is worth swapping into one of my 460 trucks?
4. If I don't use it I am thinking of selling the motor and all the wiring and computer. What would be a resonable price to ask for the motor.
230hp, 390tq (I'm 95% sure on those numbers, my '89 was rated at that and they didn't change anything between those two years). Great towing engine. I think peak torque was at 1800rpm or so.
2. How do these rank as a 460EFI out of the years 88-97?
Pretty decent. The only major change in regards to the EFI engines was for the '93 model year, they switched from the E7 heads to the newer F3 heads. The F3 heads have a revised swirl pattern and slightly smaller combustion chamber, resulting in about a 20hp gain, and MUCH cleaner emissions. If you wanted to, the F3 heads would simply bolt on, if you can find a good set.
3. Do you guys think it is worth swapping into one of my 460 trucks?
Maybe, the EFI 460s are great engines, IMO, but it would be a lot of work. You'd have to get the computer chipped at minimum (it controls the transmission as well, and if it doesn't detect it, it'll run in limp-home mode, I think), there'd be a LOT of wiring to be ripped out of the doner truck and spliced into the other truck, in addition to needing to completly re-work the whole fuel system and new fuel pumps (to handle the much higher fuel pressure that EFI requires)
4. If I don't use it I am thinking of selling the motor and all the wiring and computer. What would be a resonable price to ask for the motor.
That's going to depend on too many factors for me to make a guess at. Milage is big, and exactly how much wiring you can provide the buyer with, etc.
