Hi guys, been around FTE for a long time but never had a reason to visit the 6.0 forum. I'm a heavy equip mechanic. A customer recently bought a 04 F550 in a package deal with some used equipment and asked me to look at it.
The truck has been sitting for over a year because the PO thought the HPOP had gone out for the 3rd time. In looking around here I have done a few checks and the HPOP is working well enough to destroy a 1000 PSI guage Checked fuel pressure, got 60 PSI at the secondary filter. Checked the FICM and have 20V for the first 3-4 seconds and then 46.6V, while cranking it will hold 46.6 and try to fire, when it does the voltage will drop to 29-30V. Is this a classic FICM failure? I do not have a scan tool, but have a friend coming by this evening with one that should read the codes.
Sorry for the long post, but I have never been a PSD fan. My likes are more along the lines of the older IDI and other mechanical engines.
Update: Was able to get it running this morning after being plugged in all night, not well, but running. KOEO FICM voltage 46.6, started engine, voltage dropped to 22.5. It ran for a few minutes missing, smoking and very little response from throttle. Slowly smoothed out and idled well, voltage still 22.5 and little throttle response. Checked battery voltage, 12.1, uh-oh, alternator not charging. Probably what killed the FICM in the first place. With charger on it and 13.2 volts to the FICM the voltage would vary between 33 and 38 volts. At this point it would rev to around 3K and start fluttering, but return to a smooth idle. After running about 5 minutes voltage started dropping until I killed it at 22.5. Gonna pull the FICM after engine cools and see if the solder joints are the problem.
Local dealer has a FICM for $450, plug and play.
I'll drive past Teague to buy my parts from Smackover Motors
Yeah, I figured out that the FICM is bad, had it running after soldering the joints, no change. After running about 15 minutes the voltage started going down, when it dropped below 22V, there was a noticeable change in idle and below 21 volts it was barely running. When it dropped below 20 it died, but the voltage immediately went back to 46.6
I'll pick up the new FICM in the morning and see what happens. Not sure but if I understood the parts man correctly, it is only the power supply section that is replaced

He's selling you a HALF FICM shell. You can get a completely repaired/upgraded FICM for the same price (actually less) from several places if you have a little time. The half shell may or may not fix your problem.
Well, so far, so good. Installed to FICM on a half shell, truck fired right up. Checked voltage and it held steady at 48.1V. Truck runs and drives good, we'll see if this fix holds.
Now if I can just forget that I ever looked under the hood of a PSD powered truck and go back to my IDI, I'm good. I still don't think one will ever make it into my stable
