I think you would want at least an inch clearance and even then it will heat up the steering box some. That would be too close to suit me.

Wouldn't it be easier/better just to find different headers/manifolds?

What engine are you runniing?

I agree. Should be much easier to change the exhaust rather than the steering box!

I just got a message from anotherforum reader asking where he could get a Toy box. PM me with your email addy and I'll put you in touch. Don't know how much help the stock box is going to be, it's nearly the same size. Have you tried contacting Sanderson headers? Used to be they would modify their headers to fit if they didn't have for the application.

Have you considered using a stock type exhaust manifold? I was very limited with my 302 and Volare steering box in my 49 but I found that 64-66 Mustang cast iron exhaust manifolds work great. They should fit the 351W as well. I know they don't have the performance potential of headers but they clear most any steering box...

I want to run headers. I may see about putting stanless shield around the G/B. Again with the 351W it is a little wider. A 302 would mostly work.

Did you offset the engine? I offset my 302 two inches to the passenger side and even then I will have to use a shorty filter...

I'm going to guess that you've got the engine mounted with it centered in the chassis. Is there any reason that you can't cheat the engine over to the passenger side about an inch? Many, many factory installations are offset. It's a common thing.

Edit - Vern and I were thinking the same thing at the same time!
