OBDII and interior question

When snooping under hood doing GPs I cleaned a lot of gunk covered parts such as valve covers and other parts while I had them apart. I cam across something on Either the Valve cover or head of engine itself that said this is not a OBDII engine or something along those lines...I thought after 96 all cars can be scanned by a OBDII scanner (which I Own one). So whats the scoop? Can I scan my truck with my scanner and if so where the heck is the scan plug hiding...Thanks

Question 2. My dash has a crack which Im not too worried about but the leather dash part just above the radio is cracked one end to the other from years of sun or dry weather. Any hook ups on replacing interior parts such as this besides a good ole junk yard?

Thanks again for all the the help since ive joined. Starting to enjoy my old terdbox now that she runs daily

our trucks are strange on the OBD2 thing.
From what I understand, they are OBD2 in some ways, but not in others.

Can't help you on the OBDII question, but on the dash pad question, I wasn't able to find anything along the lines of a replacement dash pad through the usual suspects (including LMC Truck) so I ended up pulling one from a truck in my favorite bone yard. Got a dash pad with only one tiny crack on the top corner above the radio (nothing a well placed drop of super glue won't fix) and a handful of other misc interior light lenses, covers, switches, etc all for a $20 bill. Can't beat the bone yard if you can find one in the right color and condition, which on that part is a challenge.

Do you know if that pad piece will uninstall via screw or is it attached permanent

That piece comes off the dash with 6-8 little nuts from the inside of the dash. I had to pull the radio out of the dash to do it and then dropped the glove box (release the tabs that keep it from opening all the way and then let it hinge down toward the floor). After that you can get the nuts off the back of the studs that hold that piece in there. It's really not that bad a job to do. Takes 10 minutes or so with a 1/4" socket set and deep sockets. Seems like the nuts were 7/16" maybe. Possibly 10mm? I don't recall for sure. After the nuts are off the studs it just pulls right off the front of the dash. I kept my old one. Thought it might be cool to design my own replacement insert to go in there some day using either a nice piece of finished hardwood, or (and I like this idea better) a piece of milled and brushed aluminum.

My brother knows how to wrap quad seats and stuff I wonder if a fresh piece of vinyl could be wrapped over the cracked material

I don't know why it couldn't be re-wrapped. Especially since it is bolted into place, the bolts would help keep the vinyl from coming loose over time.

Vehicles with a GVW of 8500 or greater were exempt from OBDII. My guess is if you have one of those generic OBDII scanners it probably won't be able to tell you much about your truck, if anything. Give it a try though, you never know.

Yeah, it's not fully OBDII compliant. Snap-On scanners will work, though, and other high end scanners may also work. The only make that I KNOW will work, though, is Snap-On. Alternatively, you can get software, such as Auto Engenuity that will tell you everything these scanners could tell you and more.
