I have a '95 XLT and I can't seem to read the engine codes. It has the 16 pin connector under the dash board. I have an OBDII scan tool that works on other OBDII vehicles, but when I use it on the Explorer I get an 8888 code when means it's not connected properly. It's my understanding that the 'industry' didn't fully go to OBDII until 1996 and that in Fords case the '95 may be a unique year that may need a different scan tool. Can anyone shed any light on this?? Thanks in advance.... Mike
Most '95's I've heard of are running on OBD-1, so all you'll need is a scanner that is OBD-1 compatible. If all you need are trouble codes, that can be as simple as a voltmeter/test light and a small piece of wire and instructions.
Thanks for the response, but I also have a '92 Explorer that has the OBDI connector under the hood. My '95 doesn't have that connector under the hood. Instead it has the 16 pin connector under the dash. So... I still need some advice on this.
Your '95 should have the EEC-IV connector under the hood. Ford included the connector under the dash to be ready for the mandatory switch-over on the '96s. It does not supply OBD-II information through the port under the dash.
