I have a non running motor in WNY near Buffalo. Your welcome to come up and i will give you a hand getting it out. Trans is already out so it should not take much time at all to pull it.
Just be careful shipping those front covers. I thought I had a deal on one for a truck at work. Showed up and looked great. Got it installed, fired the truck up and noticed an oil leak. Looking closer, really, really closer, there was a hairline crack in it, most likely from being bounced around during shipping (that or I got screwed). The front cover came off a windowed block with low mileage so I'm guessing it was the shipping that did it.
Just a thought, I had a cracked front cover and had it welded up. When I was bolting the top cover on the HPO res, some wiring was pinched on the back side. I heard it when it cracked and knew it would be a lot of trouble to fix. Could not find a used one so figured it was worth a shot trying to weld it. I think I had to do just a little machine work to get squared back up.
Changing it out is no fun. I remember the oil pick up was a booger. It is bolted to the front cover.
It has been holding up for several years and no leak.
Is the SD cover the same as the 96? I thought it changed in 97 and put the oil pick up on the opposite side?
I am not sure when the change over happened. The engine that is going in is a 97 though. But when the pans come off I will let you know if they are the same.
I'll post some pics of this one. It's in great shape externally. Said it smoked at idle. I'm thinking injector orings. I'm gonna compression test it to see what its got.
Keep in mind there was also a change during the SD years where they redesigned the front cover top so that it takes a different o-ring gasket between the cover and the HPOP reservoir. I want to say 00 maybe? Grab the reservoir cover too so you know for sure. Early ones had no screen in the reservoir gasket, later ones added a screen. The wrong o-ring will crack the front cover when you tighten the reservoir top.
