steering column shortage

At least I think its in the steering column. I have a 1984 bronco, when I put the key in and turn it to 'on', I have a 50/50 chance that the power will actually turn on 'instrument panel lighting up.' But when I turn the ignition to start the engine, everything goes dark. Battery is charged, and the dome light and floorboard lights will stay on through all of this. If anyone could point me in the right direction that would be great.

Ignition switch would be my first suspicion. Will it still start? Are any other electrical circuits affected by this situation?

If you need to drive around for the week and plan on repairing this on the weekend, do this: put the key in the ON position (make sure you got power) and jump the starter solenoid. If this works you would have proved that the problem is in the switch as Grey stated. And you will also be able to start the truck until you get time to work on it.
