I have a scraping sound in the top of my steering column. When I turn the wheel, it sounds like a spring rubbing just under the horn button. Has anybody else had this problem on their manual steering column? And were you able to fix it? Thanks, John
don't know what year you have
mine's '69
same noise, large gap at he top of the column
between the wheel and the column.
check rag joint, if stressed could be cab mounts shot.
if not then like mine the collar clamp at the bottom has slipped
or lower bearing gone. either way, not very good news, eh?
causes the lower clamp to ride against the column sleeve and bind.
not too safe, mine's down and in the garage until i can get to it.
mine is a 70, i just changed steering columns and i tore 2 of em apart. There is a spring that sits right on top of your steering shaft inside the column and holds the upper bearing sleeve tight. If your lower bearing sleeve, one closest to the rag joint slipped out and you have some movement of the shaft, it could cause some noise. However, there could be any number of other reasons for the noise.
Fixit parts are available from www.macsautoparts from anywhere between 3 to 20 dollars and the work in tearing it apart and putting it back together should not take more than a couple of hours. Go for it, open her up and take a look, you just might find that its a simple fix.
Had that noise too on my '72. The little spring on the horn contact ring had worn too much on the end, and it was metal to metal. If you pull your wheel off and look in there, you will see where yours is coming from. They aren't that complicated. Could also be the turn signal canceller cam rubbing.
