Are there any differences between the starters on an automatic vs a manual truck?
I just had the starter for my auto transmission rebuilt a few months ago, so I'm hoping I won't have to get another, I'm putting a manual transmission into the truck.
I have a couple of each in the shop and the auto is a little longer, about 3/8 of an inch. I have used manual ones on the 302 with the c/4.,sometimes they won't ingage good. I only did it a few times and thought i might damage the newflex plate ,so i bought the right on. No more missing the ingagment. You could just try it ,if it misses ingaging the flexplate ,then you know what to do. JIM
I just reread your post and see you are going the other way. The starter may be to long and jam in to the flywheel. You can get shims to move it out at the NAPA parts stores and a few others. It's just a ring with bolt holes in it about 1/8 of an inch thick ,so it might take a couple. I have used them, don't really like them but i had the same problem once and used them until i needed a new starter ,then i got the right one. Ford made them at one time for a few years but not anymore i heard .Part number D6TZ-11N004 , H.M.C. makes them now unless they have discontinued too.
Sam, i think the problem is only with the small block,289.302 and maybe 351w. I'v never had the problem with 460 ,351m or 400. Never owned any others. Here's what it looks like ,you may not need it .
Sorry, I should have mentioned what motor, it is an FE. I think you folks just saved me $50!
On a similar subject, how hard is it to replace the ring gear on a flywheel? Or should I just have that done at the machine shop? It will be going to there anyway (needs to be turned) but if I can save a dollar, I'm all ears!
Throw the new ring gear in the oven for half an hour to 45 min. It will drop right on. If you want to be double sure it will drop on, throw the flywheel in the freezer at the same time. Not hard to do.................

So that really works huh ? Somebody told me that once, but he was such a story teller ,i never paid much attention to him. I'l keep that on my ,believe it list,L.O.L.
I've heard of the oven trick, I'm sure mom would appreciate me throwing the ring gear in the oven and that dirty flywheel in the freezer! Maybe if I clean them first...
Nah, I've got a buddy with a torch, I better give him a call.
