Going to be putting the heads back on my 408 today(!), but I know I need to know more about how exactly to do it. I know to oil the threads and head flanges of the bolts, and I know to cross tighten obsessively carefully, but is there some specific pattern to use? And how hard do I torque down? It's about 40* outside right now, where the truck is, will that be OK? Do I have to take the valve covers off and retorque stuff after a run? Or maybe just retorque after sitting for a day or 2?
Basically if you think I might not know it, tell me, this is one part I dooo NOT want to screw up.
400 with 9.2 CR, iron stock heads, and stock head bolts.
Start with the middle bolts and work out, tightening opposite sides obviously. I dont know what the final tq down is with the 400. It's 90ftlbs on the FE and it's torqued down in 3 stages, 70, 80, and then final tq to 90. Run it for a day and re-tq.
Some bolts dont require a re-tq. They are called tq to yield bolts and are a one time use.
1st step 75 ft/lb 2nd step 95 to 105 ft/lb - start at center two bolts and work out in a z pattern. IE if the bolts are numbered 10-6-2-4-8 (looking over the drivers side fender) on the outside bolts front to to back and the inner bolts are numbered 9-5-1-3-7 - tighten in that sequence
