85 300, Canadian truck, emission exempt, non feed back.
Carter YF.
I'm having an issue with what seems to be the accelerator pump dribbling fuel after. it only happens after the throttle has been moved after the engine is started.
I can start the truck and it idles great pulls 19.5 - 20" of vacuum.
Once the throttle is bumped it then dribbles a little fuel in spurts as the engine surges from it happening.
this is after i rebuilt it, it did this so i pulled it back off and double checked everything and its all as the white paper says it should be
Dumb question from a novice, but is the accelerator pump torn by chance? I only ask because I had to rebuild my carb a second time 3 months after the first, due to the accelerator pump tearing. Mine, however, was a '78 300.
Dribbling fuel? Is the fuel spilling out onto the engine? If it is, your float probably isn't set right. If you look at the breakdown diagram of the carb you will see a part called the lifter pump. It fits into a channel in the carb body and moves when you hit the throttle to actuate the accelerator pump.
That channel is open on the bottom and fuel can come out of it. If you are getting fuel coming out of the carb and onto the engine, it is probably coming out that channel on the bottom of the carb. My guess would be too much fuel in the bowl from the float setting being off and the movement of that lifter pump part is causing fuel to be pushed in that channel and out onto the engine.
I hope I was able to explain this without confusing you. I had the same problem. I think when I put the float assy back into the carb body I bumped the float and knocked it out of its proper setting.
Actually, I have a question... How long have you owned the truck? You say the problem happens after you bump the throttle... Is it possible you're pulling it down from high idle too fast?
it's coming out the accelerator pump nozzle that sticks into the barrel of the carb. i can give it throttle and it will shoot a larger stream of fuel make i want it to but its also doing the dribble drip thing and i don't want it to
Carter YF = problem. I'm not saying they're not dependable but when I can get mine swapped out, my old 1 barrel is going to the shooting range with me we haven't gotten along all that well and I have grown to strongly dislike it..

I second this. The YF is a pain to get working correctly, and often does not continue to work correctly for long.
If you have fuel dribbling out of the accelerator pump nozzle, then make sure the check valve is in place. Where the fuel comes up from the accelerator pump there is a recess in the carb body where a steel ball bearing goes in with a brass weight on top of it. If the ball and brass weight are missing, the air flow can suck fuel out of the accelerator nozzle.
I don't know of any other 1 bbl that fits directly. Any carb you use will require an adapter. I machined an adapter to put a Carter BBD (2 bbl) on mine. I have not had a chance yet to install it, so I can't say how it works. Others have tried Motorcraft 2100's on an adapter. Some have tried Holley 2 bbl with an adapter.
Probably the best overall solution is a new intake manifold and a small 4 bbl or large 2 bbl.
