Help I am totally stumped! I've got a weird vibration comming from the rear of my 92 3.0 litre shorty. It only happens at 120 Kmph (approx 75 MPH) It gets worse as I speed up! I reballanced all four tires...still there! Maybe the U-joints...they were due anyway so I got them replaced...still there!?! This is a severe vibration that scares the heck out of me!The van has 225,000 kms on it. Any ideas? Thanks!
Have you swapped tires? Sometimes tires may balance OK, but they could be out of round or have some belt separation. If you move the rear tires to the front and the vibration moves, you've found the problem. Also, it wouldn't hurt to check things like the pinion bearings, axle bearings, tranny tailshaft bushing, suspension. There's also the rare possibility of a bent axle. It's very hard to say for sure what it is, there are lots of possibilities.
Does the vibration change when you coast or accelerate?
I have a similar problem with my 1990 4.0L 6cyl Areostar. Has 165,000 miles. The vibration occurs when I get up around 50-55 mph. It subsides greatly to almost non-existant when I let off the gas though. Another thing is when I mash the gas pedal to the floor the engine really kicks in and the vibration stops.
I thought about the tires..with respect to the belts seperating or something, but with so many miles on it, I wondered if it's something more problematic than just tires.
Could be a rear drum out of ballance. But from my past experience it is bad U joints. They tend to start vibrating at that speed. I would definitely change them out.
thanks for the great info...I'm going to switch the front tires to the back and see if that helps or if the vibration moves to the front. The guy at my local shop said it might be a bent drive shaft?? Also the vibration stays the same when I coast or step on it . thanks again
One other thing. You said you replaced the u-joints. When you took the driveshaft off, did you mark the driveshaft and put it back together the same way? You need to make sure none of the parts got rotated relative to their original orientations with respect to each other.
There was a recall on the van for (if memory serves) a bearing on the drive shaft. At higher speeds, > 75 Mph, a very pronounced vibration would be felt in the van. Ford covers the recall. Might give Ford a call and give them your VIN. Thery can let you know if there are any outstanding recalls on your van. Happy motoring!
