VSS is an inexpensive part. You might as well replace it, because it could be the source of your difficulty. I got mine for a little over $20, if I remember correctly. You can get them from RockAuto if you don't mind waiting for shipping.

It's worth noting that Snap-On code readers are expensive, but I believe most mechanics have them, and most of them in my area offer free diagnostics. Good luck with your problem and I hope you work it out alright.
