I've got the same problem on my 99. I took it to a mechanic and he said it sounded like it was something near the torque converter. I cant hear it when I'm at the front of the truck with the hood up. Just sounds like a regular beast 7.3. But if you walk back towards the cab on either side it sounds like someone is shaking a bunch of pennies in a coffee can under the truck. I thought it might be the DI chip I've got but its not coming from the motor.

That sounds like the infamous torque converter rattle. I think it was primarily on the early 99's. Sounds like a different issue than the op so I would start a new thread or do some searching.
If your truck is a 99, early or late, and the noise sounds like marbles in a tin can, then it is probably your torque converter. Mine got so noisy, I replaced the converter.
Just reread the OP's post and see he has an 02, if that's the case, then it's not his TC. Give a little more decription of the noise. Maybe an idler pulley bearing?
think i got same noise, like someones tapping on something metal with a metal object.....but mine , i believe, dont follow with rpm increase, just at da#@ idle.

If it's like mine, marbles in a can is about as good a decription as I can think of. Mine would not be near as loud if I shifted to neutral or park, but if it was in gear and at idle, it would rattle.

If it is the TC, then no, but the 99's were the ones that were plagued with that problem. You need to decide for sure what it is before saying it want hurt anything. It's possible your turbo is hitting the housing. You can pull your intake and have a look see.
