no start

Having trouble with 7.3 automatic. Both batteries are good, took the starter out and both starter and solenoid tested good, but it will not crank over but a few times and then nothing. Only then im just getting a click from the solenoid on the fenderwell. Is my starter kicking the bucket or do i have problems elsewhere?

How does it stop cranking? Does it slow down till it stops or does it stop suddenly? Do jumper cables help any? Sure sounds like either batteries or starter. Have you replaced one battery, but not the other within the last 6 months by chance?

Sure sounds like batteries. Check the voltage while attempting to crank. If its falling below 10.5, time for batteries or find out why they are not charging, alt?

ok, it cranks over slowly and then just stops. 3 batteries have tested good and tried with it. Jumper cables dont help at all. Actually one battery was replaced about a month after the tranny got rebuilt.

How did you test the batteries? If you unhooked them, load tested each alone, then it's further down the line. Check each and everyone of the connections between the batteries and the starter, making sure each is clean and tight. Next would be the starter. I would think if the engine is hydro locked, it wouldn't turn over at all.

Yep, that pretty much says it all. Time for TWO new batteries.

We see this all the time. If you don't replace BOTH batteries at the same time, it's usually within 6 months or so that you end up with a no start situation since the old battery pulls down the new one.

Confirmed today it is not the batteries. Picked up a Chiltons manual today and have determined the the range sensor or neutral switch is done.

How was it confirmed and how did jumping it off bypass a bad switch?

all three batteries were tested at the auto parts store. All good, tried them all in our 73 302- all three crank it over in a heartbeat. book says if when the tranny is put in park and the back-up lights come on, and it doesnt start in N or P, the range sensor is likely at fault. The truck doesnt even try to turn over anymore

Or just in need of adjustment, when not within range it will not try to start at all though, it will just click?

Here's some helpful adjustment information...

Here's a link to what Mark was talking about, https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/64...t-linkage.html

Here's one for the adjustment of the linkage, https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/84...djustment.html

Here's a pic of the thumbwheel which will just adjust the pointer once the trans is verified to be in the correct gear, https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/83...-the-mark.html
