clutch or transmission

Got a 96 250! Go fords! Anyway. My truck has 264,000 miles on it. Replaced the clutch at 237000 original tranny. My question is when comin to a stop sign or comin up to a turn with the clutch in it grinds in 2nd gear like the clutch isn't engagin. Wud this be a tranny problem or my clutch. Only does it in 2nd gear. Is there a way to adjust the clutch if that's the problem? Thanks guys for any input!

master cylinder rod end bushing is most likely gone, probably wore out the pin it rides on. hemi joint on e bay is a great fix. also check clutch pedal box bushings.

mine grinds into second on downshifts 90% of the time. Since we use 2nd for take off, I think it wears out a bit quick.

You are supposed to use 1st. That is why they put it in there. LOL.

I would first check the clutch rod. The fix is an easy one. Get it from ebay "ford clutch fix". While under there look real good at the bedal box. See if it flexes or has cracks in it.
Next I would lean towards Tranny. The clutch is not adjustable.

It's probably the sychros. With only one gear (especially a higher gear than 1st) presenting, I doubt you have clutch problems.

With that many miles, you're looking at one worn-out transmission. If you don't want to rebuild the transmission just yet, consider double clutching on the down shift.

As a side note, how often do you grab second? I run mine all the way down to like 5 mph in 3rd if I'm not coming up a steep grade.

Don't worry about launching in 2nd on level ground when the truck's empty. It doesn't hurt anything. 1st is optional when you're running empty. Though, I have found it to be ideally geared for creeping with stop light to stop light traffic.

Oh to check if your clutch pedal is aligned properly, hold the pedal about 1/2 to 3/4" off the floor with the transmission in neutral. Then attempt (slowly!) to engage 1st or rev. It should go right in without grinding or notching. If it does, your clutch is fine.

Tell you what though.
First gear in our trucks is a godsend on slippery roads.
