My '76 4x4 F-100 with a 360 and 4spd shudders sometimes when you takeoff in 2nd. It did it with the original motor and clutch and I put a new engine and clutch in and was suprised when it still did it after. I figured it was the clutch. Doesnt do it in granny gear. I have checked all motor and tranny mounts for anything loose and cant find anything. U joints are new. Feels like 2nd is maybe to high a gear to start in but it the way it pulls in 2nd doesnt seem like its too high. I have 33'' tires with a 3.50 rear. Someone suggested that the leaf springs get tired and weak and can cause this. If not that, maybe the bushings where the leafs bolt to the frame?
My 77 F150 with the 351m in it does this same thing! I just figured the motor was a little too piggy to handle turning the tires (I also have 3.50 gearing and 33's) in 2nd gear.
Does yours sometimes not have much "get up and go" when you take off from second?

No, its got plenty of get up and go, it feels more like somethings loose, I'm stumped. I think its coming from the rear springs or rear end somehow. there appears to be no slop in the rear end, I'm going to have a friend get in it and ease out on the clutch while I watch the springs and see if I can identify whats going on. Thing is, it did the same thing with the original engine and clutch, same thing after a new one so I dont think thats whats causing it.
U joints are new. If you are rolling just the least bit, it doesnt do it, takes off with plenty of power or if you are dead level it wont but if there is any incline or such, it will shudder.
No, runs like a sewing machine. Only thing, is, it idles abit high when its warm, I have the idle screw all the way out and the idle mixture screws are set using a vac gauge to where I get the highest reading per instructions. Does yours do it at all in 1st? Mine doesnt
Not ever. I let the clutch out and she doesn't lug or nothing. Only time it'll "shudder" is when I romp on 'er in 1st and that's because it has some bad axle wrap.

Yeah only on take off though. If I'm moving and shift from 1st to 2nd, it won't, but taking off in 2nd it will. I think my 351m might be a little pissed out though and it's just lugging the motor because it really drops in RPM when I take off in 2nd.
I'm reading this and knowone has said anything about their flywheels.
This sounds like a classic case of clutch chatter. When a clutch overheats from hard use and slipping when worn your flywheel can develop very small cracks and ripples on the surface. Either replace your flywheel or find a shop that can resurface yours. Whenever i replace a clutch the flywheel gets special attention. BTW this chatter will transmt through your entire drveline.
I planned on doing a clutch and flywheel change on mine when I do the motor swap. Still riding with the original 1977 clutch haha. I just started ignoring it and taking it easy on the truck.

As long a you know not to overlook the flywheel you'll be fine, it's pretty common
