So I'm not sure if I have a trans problem or a clutch problem. I have a 1996 f-150, 4.9, m5od manual transmission. What happens is it is hard to shift into gear sometimes. Usually when it's still a little cold. And it's 1st, 2nd and reverse that are mostly affected. But when I get it into gear it's fine. Also it helps if I take my foot off the clutch then push it back down again. That will make it easier to get into gear. So basically I don't know if my tranny needs a rebuild? Or master cylinder or just the whole clutch assembly. The guy I had bought the truck from told me the clutch had just been done. Any help would be greatly apreciated!
It sounds like a clutch release problem. You need to test and see how much FREE PLAY you have in the clutch pedal. IE how far the pedal goes down before it starts disengaging the clutch. You can actually feel this if you know how to feel it.
When you take off from a dead stop, how far does the pedal have to come up before you feel the clutch start to grab? Have you checked the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder? Don't forget to remove the rubber cup under the cap.
That was something u did notice. When I first got the truck it was only an inch or two before you could actually feel some resistance when pushing down the clutch. Now that is more like 3 or so inches before I feel resistance. As for when it starts to disengage, that has remained the same. It doesn't take too much before she starts Rolling. And my fluid seems fine it comes not clear full but there is some on the rubber cap when I take it off. Do you think that bleeding the clutch system and putting fresh fluid in would help? Thanks for the quick reply!
Update:
I have been babying my truck the past couple days and the problem seems to have gone away. The clutch feels more normal and she goes into gear without an issue.
I just bled my clutch for the exact same reasons. Check this video out, it pulls air out that is often very difficult to remove with gravity bleeding. My pedal has not felt better in 6 years,
Yep, this is an old thread.... But the exact same issue is happening today to many with a hydraulic clutch (regardless of the brand of vehicle). In fact, more issues today with the after market parts. I am dealing with similar issues. Some of it is in the design.
By the clutch not releasing, it puts premature wear on the synchronize's in the transmission.
