im putting a thermocouple in soon and i was wondering if it goes in all dry or if there is a compound to use. it doesnt look like it is going to seal very well on the outer (smaller) threads that the thermo connects to. not a big deal? i tried a quick google search and couldnt find much other than a lot of info on location
If it's going in the up-pipe, the most common method there is to drill and clamp. No compound needed, and there should be a washer that is included to help it seal to the pipe.
If it's going in the manifold, just drill, tap, and when you bolt in the thermocouple you can use a dab of anti-seize on the threads.

havent decided yet, im going to make a game-time decision when i got up/under there to see where is easiest to get to.
by drill and clamp, you mean a hose clamp? im not really following you there..i didnt get any washers with it. got it from dieselperformance.com
Drill the manifold!!!!!!! I used hi-temp anti-sieze, but like the little old lady says 'I put that ***** on everything!'.
Good drill bits make easy work of it. Use a vacuum and a bent nail with a magnet to remove the shavings. Don't sweat the shavings (like I did), as soon as engine fires, they are gently blown right out of the tailpipe. Its likely no damage would occur if you did nothing to remove them...
I tapped my manifold so the threads for the probe 'bung' were flush with the inside of the manifold. Careful ya don't tap the threads tooooo deep!

Well, I guess you don't have the drill and clamp option. Otherwise, you would have seen the clamp in the package with the thermo probe.
Drilling and tapping the manifold is super easy, and only takes a few minutes. I've done both (in the up-pipe with the drill and clamp, and in the manifold with the drill and tap), and I prefer the drill and tap in the manifold.
Just look under the truck, driver's side manifold, at the back where it makes it's bend. There's your bullseye, it doesn't get any prettier than drilling straight up into the manifold there.
