5.4 Using Oil

Up to 122,700 miles now on my 04. I bought it new and have always changed my own oil. The last 3 times I have changed the oil I have noticed that there is only about 5 qts draining out. What could be causing it to use oil?

Well, don't know what could be causing your oil conumption. 2 quarts is quite a bit. I have been around a lot of high mileage motors in my life and always had a general rule that if it used a quart on a change it was acceptable. BUT, I do know that you shoudln't find out it is low when you drain the oil to change. You should be checking it in between changes with the dipstick. If you are running it with only 5 quarts in it you could be causing some damage. If I knew that I had an engine that used oil I always checked it at least once a week, depending on consumption.

How many miles between changes, what weight oil, what kind of driving..... I have a 08 with 110k, mostly freeway and I turn off OD when I'm coasting down long grades and have used approx 1/2 quart every 2000 since new. Have had 5 of the same trucks since 97, all 5.4 and the consumption has been the same on every one. I use Motocraft 5w20 blend and Moto filter and change around 4500 + or -.

I have always used 5w-20 motorcraft or a full synthetic on sale. I make a 45 mile interstate commute twice a day. Last change was right at 4,600 miles. I never let it get to 5,000 miles.

Your maintenance is spot on... quart every 2000 is not bad per any manufacture, most accept quart every 1000 as acceptable. Like I posted earlier, I usually rack up 1k a week or more with mountain grades in southern california. All 5 of same equipped trucks that I have had consumed approx 1/2 quart between 1500 to 2000 miles. I always check cold on level ground. Now my Infiniti M oil consumption...thats another story.....
