How much oil do you burn between oil changes?

So I did my first oil change at 1500 miles now have 5700 miles. Since my last oil change I have used 1qt. This seems like a lot for roughly 4000 miles since last oil change. I have a 2011 fx4 crew with the 5.0. What do you guys think? About 10 years ago I had a ranger that used 1qt. between oil changes (3000 miles). The dealer told me then that was considered normal.

sounds like a lot to me on a brand new engine. If it was older and had more miles then no big deal. But my 04 with 86,000 dont use a DROP in between changes. I would try to get the dealer to look at it.

My 2010 5.4 gets 5w-20 Mobile 1 every 5000 miles and it burns exactly zero! It doesn't ever move from the top line on the stick. I wouldn't worry a lot about a quart in 4000 miles though, especially on a new engine. Give it a bit more time and I'll bet you see it diminish.

Ford says 1qt per 900 miles is normal. My 01 5.4L never used a drop when I had it.

My family and I have a fair history with the mod motors:
1997 Expedition 4.6
2000 Super Duty 5.4
2001 Expedition 5.4 (x2)
2001 F150 5.4
2003 F150 5.4
2007 F150 5.4
2009 F150 5.4
2010 F150 5.4

None of these ever burned any noticable quantity of oil for at least the first 100K, and many ran over 150K. The worst was the 97 Expedition which was burning about a quart every 5K at 188K.

2010 F150 4.6L - none between 4500 miles oil changes
2003 F250 5.4L - none between 3000 miles oil changes
2002 F150 4.6L - none between 3000 miles oil changes
1999 F250 7.3L - none between 3000 miles oil changes
1994 F150 4.9L - none between 3000 miles oil changes
1986 F150 5.0L - less than 1 quart between 3000 miles oil change (288,000 miles on the clock)
1981 F100 5.0L - 4 quarts per 200 miles. (No kidding!) with only 110,000 miles on the clock. (No piston rings left)

This does not look good. I really don't want the dealership to have to crack open this motor. It will probably never be the same. I guess I will just keep an eye on it. Hopefully after a few more miles it will get better.

Well, maybe, and maybe not. We had a 2000 F250 with a 5.4L/4R100 at work, and that thing burned about a quart to a quart and a half every 3000 miles when it was new. At about the 4th or 5th oil change, it quit burning oil. And that thing had some serious mileage when we got rid of it. Somewhere in the 400,000 miles region. So, you can never tell.

Mine doesn't burn any either. I didn't think it was a good thing for modern engines to burn oil. This is interesting info.

MC 5w20 syn blend every 5k (because I tow the boat, I follow the special operating conditions service schedule - doesn't 'use' (burn/leak/transport/give away) any.

I wouldn't sweat it, yet...

I hope it will make it that long. I will be taken it in for it's second oil change next saturday. It will be close to 5000 mile oil change interval. When I take it in I will ask them then what they think about the loss of oil. I will let you guys know what they say.
