I am running Shell Rotella T full synthetic, my oil change intervals are 10k miles. I use Motorcraft oil filter. My question is, is there any benefit to changing the oil filter at 5k miles?
I run Rottela for 10,000 miles and send the sample to Blackstone Lab. They advised me to run it for 2000 more and no word about filter. PS is having huge filters and I assume they are design for long runs.
I run normal 15-40. I change mine every 3k. It came with a oil change package when I bought my truck. I told them every 5k is good with me, but they insist on 3k. So Im not goin to complain lol. It just takes 45 minutes of my own time to get it done.
As far as your changes go. Change to a higher quality filter and you'll be good. Look at Mobile1 or the new Bosh Distance+. Great filters for syn oil, and easy to find.
the manual says now to change the oil every 5k miles. i don't have a problem replacing the filter @ 5k miles. i probably pay more for 2 filters but i get a new filter instead of having one on longer. Know what i mean?
Best thing to do when your trying to figure out exactly how long you can go between oil changes, is get your oil tested. By testing your oil they can tell you alot of information, more then your owners manual ever will!
I run co-op 0-40 syn all year around, with donaldson filters, and I change mine every 10,000 kilometers.
I run Shell 15W-40 as well
change it every 3K
When I ran the synthetic, I usually ran it to 10K
I have it tested every other change, so far engine is happy!

What he said for me too. Except: when I tow my 5er I come in at around 20,000 lbs and I don't baby it. When I sent my sample at 10 thou they suggested that I only go 8000 between changes. I had towed for almost 6000 miles on that change.

Reason: Except
Although I am using Delo 15w40 and MC oil filters, the MC oil is a decent oil choice. Hard to beat the price at WM 12 bucks for a 5 quart jug. Heck, you can do a MC oil and filter change for about 46 bucks, don't get any cheaper than that.
if you listen close enough your engine will tell you whe it's time to change...at least mine does. between 3K and 4K mine will start getting a little louder.... i change it between 4K and 5K and it says thank you

I run Motorcraft oil for 5000 miles and had it tested. The results were worse than Rotella after 10,000 miles.
For anyone running extended oil changes, you should always get oil samples tested.
The problem with extended oil changes on the PSD is the HPOP. Unlike many other diesels, our engines use a high pressure oil pump to drive the injectors, at pressures reaching close to 3000 psi on a stock engine when under load or WOT. The HPOP has a shearing effect on the oil, reducing the lifespan of the oil. Different oils react differently in regards to the amount of shearing, as does driving habits. If you tow a lot, or have a heavy right foot, that oil will shear faster.
