Update on U.S. Built Merc.

Hi All So far since last posting here about this only one lead has been useful, a 56 Merc. C.O.E. that was for sale in the Winnipeg, Man. area. The vin# on that truck is C70Z6Hxxxxx, again my Merc. C.O.E.'s vin# is C50V6Hxxxxx. About 3 yrs. ago I looked at a C.O.E. Ford that had a 55 cab but had a 56 vin ( sorry I have misplaced it ) with the letter "H". All 3 Detroit built trucks.
Sooo I'm still thinking that perhaps all 53 - 56 Ford and Merc. C.O.E.'s were built at the Detroit Truck Plant, but 3 examples doesn't prove or disprove this theory.
Another odd thing, the Winnipeg, Man. truck (C700) has a Ford emblem on the hood and Mercury letters below the hood. There was a picture of a grey 56 Merc. tow truck (C600) from the Calgary, Alta. area that also has same emblems. Mine (C500) has no indication of ever having a Ford emblem on the hood. Also the owner of the Winnipeg truck told me that the glove box tag says "Mercury built by Ford".
I also did a post on the Large Truck site about this. Has 100 lookies but no replies. Anybody want to shoot my theory down, go ahead. Any input pro or con I would be happy to have any opinions or facts.
Thank you in advance. Bye for now

Thanks for the encouragement Wayne but have about run out of leads. Might try to PM and e-mail some members again to try and get more info. I know of a 55 Ford coe about 60 mi. from here I might be able to look at. Looked at it and talked to the owner about 4 yrs. ago. He was 85 at that time and had a stroke so hope he is still with us. He knew the truck from back in the late 50's. It came out of Texas to Mahood Lake, B.C. and sat on a farm there until he acquired and restored it. The old guy did a very nice job on it. Will take some pics of it if I can get some time to go to where it was, about a 2 hr. round trip.
Bye for now. Rod

Did you try calling the Ford of Canada customer service line? There's a guy there that does all kinds of lod car research. If you need or want it, I can probably dig it out of my archives, if I can remember where they are. lol

The phone number I found is 905-845-2511. Ask for John Albano. Or you can try his email, jalbano3@ford.com. I emailed him last summer with all the codes from my truck. Unfortunately, all he could do was decode my VIN, which was info I already had, and it took about 3-4 weeks for him to get back to me. But it sounds like that is info that would really help you.

Good luck.

Thanks Wayne. That is probably the best lead so far. Some one else gave me that e-mail address a while ago but it wouldn't go through. Now I see why, it was spelled wrong - jalbana instead of jalbano. Will find my failed e-mail, correct it and resend.
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, back at the salt mine you know.
Thanks again - Rod

Update on U.S. Built Merc.

Hi all I e-mailed John Albano about this subject and this is the partial reply from the Ford Archivist.
Quote: "I have spent a long time looking into this request, and I'm afraid I don't have the records to give a very clear answer. Here is what I can say:
The Mercury truck lines were introduced into Canadian export markets in January of 1954 to allow Lincoln Mercury dealers the opportunity to enter the truck market. Records indicate they were assembled in the U.S. in our Detroit Truck and Edgewater/Mahwah plants, as well as in Oakville and Windsor in Canada (Production of the truck line was moved from Edgewater to Mahwah in July of 1955).
I do not know what model years, or quantities, were assembled at each of the plants because the production records we have for those facillities do not differentiate between the F-Series trucks and the M-Series trucks"

My conclusion is that some Merc trucks were indeed built in the U.S. starting in Jan./54. I still believe that all 54, 55 & 56 coe's for the Canadian market were built in Detroit (possibly 53 also) but I have only been able to check 56 vins.\
Sooo draw your own conclusions. I am still interested in any comments, facts, vin. numbers, ect. that anyone can come up with.

Thanks Wayne. I think we have determined that Old Ugly was in fact built in Detroit and isn't a fake. Will keep my eyes and ears open but move onto another mystery as time permits.
