I have a 04 with head studs, turbo back (mbrp), SCT X3 tunner, cold air intake.
I have just cleaned my turbo last night and I noticed that it is leaking oil from one of the three screws behind the turbine wheel. I have some oil in the inner cooler on both side's of the tubes. How much oil?
I'm going to get a rebuild kit from G-POP Shop.
Question's
1: Would it be wise to up grade the compressor wheel or leave it stock?
2: What size if I do?
I'm not looking to up grade anything else on my truck, so liability is important.
Before you tear it apart. Oil in the intercooler pipes can be from the crank case vent that feeds into the intake pre-turbo. If you're turbo seals are leaking bad enough to be a problem, you'll see oil smoke coming out your exhaust. I would leave it alone until you start seeing smoke or are having to add oil between changes.
It's blowing oil through the exhaust pretty good. Especially from a dead stop. Not so much that I can tell going down the road. It smells BAD in side the cab.
If your turbo oil seals are out it will have oil in the exhaust downpipe. Oil in the intercooler section is normal. If the blue elbow hose splits you'll get oil and possibly an "exhaust" smell in the cab. You should also check for exhaust leaks from the exhaust manifolds and y-pipe to the back of the turbo.
Oil in the down pipe? For sure. When I was cleaning the vanes and such, that is when I noticed the oil leaking. Besides the truck blowing blue smoke. I had the housing off, I had to scrap off the burnt oil and the down pipe. I put it back together on the table and was thinking about that leak. So I pulled it a part again to double check the leak. It had oil over quarter of the vanes already.

thanks Troy
Yup--time for a rebuild for sure. I wouldn't "upgrade" the compressor wheel. You're opening a can of worms you don't want mess with. If you want to upgrade your turbo then go with a powermax that has both sides made to work together. Simply enlarging the compressor wheel will give you driveability issues that are VERY difficult to tune out. BTDT and got the doctorate to prove it--LOL.
I just printed the page that (Benchwrench) had posted on the rebuild. Perfect. And no I do not want to open up any more cans of worms. LOL I have plenty of other things to do.
