Need a lot more details to be of any help but, at minimum, it sounds like you need a really good tune up.

You most likely have an FT in your dump truck. Check this link out for the differences.

Nope, sorry. FE/FT are notorious for being hard to identify. As externally all FE's (besides the SOHC) look exactly the same. Same goes for FTs. Casting numbers are a very vague guide as the same # was used for different displacements.

I would agree. Carb needs a tune and probably spark plugs/wires.

Here's how to post pictures: one way that is.....
1. Log in to FTE.
2.Click User CP (In the Top Left Hand Corner)
3.(On the Left, There will be a list, The 5th Option Down, will say "Pictures & Albums) Click That.
4.Then, Click Add Album, Enter a title, and description if ya want to.
5. Click Upload Pictures, Then click Browse, Locate the Files of your truck. (You can add 3 files at a time. There is a size limit to the pics you upload. I think it's 800x600 pixels. If you need to resize an image on your computer, you can right click it and open in paint, then click resize and type in the pixels, save and you're ready to upload)
6. Click Upload.
7. Add a description to the individual pictures if you want, then click save.
8. Add more files if ya want.
9. Click The Picture you want to post, it will give you two codes at the bottom, Right Click The Second one (It say's BB Code, Then Say's [IMG]http:blahblahblah...[/IMG])
Then, Once that is highlighted, Right Click, Then Copy, Then Paste it into your post.
You can add up to 30 Images in one FTE Post.

If that doesnt work for whatever reason you'll need a image hosting site like photobucket. Load them there and then copy and paste the IMG code at the bottom of the pics.

You have to click the "Go Advanced" next to the "Post Quick Reply" by the way to be able to add links and pics.

May be wrong but the main difference was the flywheel and a few minor things. The 390 can be an awsome engine if "built" right. Consider the 390 CAR engines. I don't think you're ready to put a 390 Cobra Jet in the truck. Many stock and aftermarket parts are available.

Ok so are the tables at fordification wrong?Decoding '73-'79 Ford Truck VIN Tags - FORDification.net

They're showing an "M" engine code as a 390 available in the 75-79 model, which didn't sound right.

Yes it would seem so. 76 was the last year for the FE.
