I had a Clifford on my 2002 including the alarm, turbo cool down and remote start. Never had a single issue in 6 years of use. My 2008 has a Ford alarm and remote start and I have not had any problems with it either since the install in Fall 2007. The only downside on the Ford system is that I can't use my door code to enter w/o the alarm going off.
Ya know, I think I'll look into it more when the weather changes. I never thought about looking at a car stereo web-site for a wiring diagram. Great idea, thanks.
The only caviet I could think of is that the Remotes are VERY fragile. At $100 each to replace my CompuStar remote with visual display and alarm pager I ended up spended $400 more because I broke 4 of them over 7 years.
These remotes are great. They show a picture of the car and a flashing display of what is open i.e. driver door open has a flashing door opening and closing. Hood up, trunk open and Truck idling with a flashing picuture of exaust coming out the back of the truck to let me know the autostart worked. I can also visually see if I locked the truck or not by looking at the little picture of the padlock open or closed.
Most important is that it acts as a pager and beeps continuously if the alarm goes off, letting me know from a distance that something is up. Not to mention that I can start (or stop) it from quite the distance and beeps to tell me when it starts.
But Because they are fragile, I've damaged them several times to the point where I had to go out and buy a new one at $100 each (4 times). A couple times I've pinched it between the doorframe and the door **** of my house door as I was closing the door with the keys in the lock, which was my fault, but hearing the crunching sound is never a fun sound.
My truck has a 6.4 diesel and it won't warm up very fast when at idle. Also I here it is bad for it to idle because of wet-stacking. This is why I have not considered remote start. I think it would be great for gas motors in cold climates.
I had a Viper 5301 system installed in my 99 dually two weeks ago. I couldn't be happier with it. I asked the installer to give it a 30 second delay, so that the glow plugs could warm up for a while. It has worked flawlessly so far. I also asked that the horn not honk, in response to input from the remotes. I think it is un-necessary. The parking lights on the truck flash and the remote beeps. That's good enough for me.
Also, when I remote start the truck, the parking/marker lights come on and stay on. I also have a Ford APCM installed in the truck, which steps up the idle to 1,200RPMs. Helps in warm up and I've heard it helps with wet stacking... Not verified.
