So I'm sure you automatic guys will do a jig at this report...
This might be the worst problem ever reported with a ZF6... my transmission has developed a loud rattle during operation. It doesn't seem to affect the shifting at all, and it still seems to operate well, but sometimes it seems that R is all the way in and up... while a few miles down the road it will be all the way up and right... then before long it will be all the way left and down... ...well you get the picture.
Does anyone know how to keep the shift pattern button from spinning and rattling?
of course all I've attempted is using my fingernail... I wanted advice before putting a screwdriver to it.
Hopefully once I get it apart I can find something better than glue... I'm thinking the torque my hand applies to it mixed with the heat of the summer is what made it loose in the first place...
My guess is that the disc part has a small tongue all the way around it that fits into a corresponding groove in the **** and all it does is snap in. I don't think there is any glue.
I could turn mine with a little force to any orientation I want, probably could do the same with the t-case **** too.
Back when the manual trans was a factory option , I've seen many brand new trucks on the lot with the shift pattern disc in all different orientations.
When I got my truck, the first thing I did when I got in to drive it home was turn the shift pattern disc to be perfectly parallel with the seat when the stick was in the neutral position.
Apparently Ford can't get those shift ***** right. I drove a 95 F150 with a manual and the shift **** did the same thing. You are right...it is annoying.

Had the same problem with my 1984 Ranger, so I glued the thing in place, problem fixed
