2005 Expedition code P0012

The CEL came on with a code of P0012. I changed both Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) solenoids myself, cleared the code, and the CEL came back on after a couple of drives. I see no change in performance, including gas mileage, and have only a slight hint of a rough idle that occasionally occurs. According to everything I've read the next step would be to replace the cam phasers, but before I spend a lot of money having a tech doing that (I don't have the tools necessary to tackle that job), I thought I'd check here to see if there were other options. Any help or feedback would be appreciated.

Replace the cam-shaft position sensor and let me know if it goes away.

I think there is just one cam shaft sensor, but there could be two...

I believe there is 1 for each bank and it looks like a very easy fix, however, I thought that if the cps went out it would throw a code (P0340). The only code I have is a P0012. Also, from my research, a bad cps would cause the engine to stall. My engine is running very good except for an occasional rough idle.

Yeah no the truck would not run very well at all if it was actually a cam issue. Its just a sensor... A search revealed a similar issue on a BMW forum... Guy had the same code. It turned out to be a cam position sensor. Even if its not its worth a try because thats a cheap and easy fix...

The part is only around $30, so I'll pick it up tomorrow and we'll see what happens.

so did it work? Replacing Camshaft position sensor.

I have a 2004 F150 with a 5.4 triton I just did the timing with Ford parts . Timing chain oil pump, water pump VCT solenoids Phasers spark plugs, and ignition coil. Replaced the mass airflow sensor Dropped the oil pan took out all the oil gunk and chain guides pieces filled it up with 5w30 . The truck runs good, but I’m getting a P0012 position over retarded. But the truck isn’t stuttering or misfiring it’s accelerating strong . I’m only getting that one p0012 code . Do you have any suggestions?
