Just picked up a 75 F150 Ranger XLT with a 460 in her. I am not a mechanic by any means but I would like to clean up the engine bay, install some performance parts, and get the best fuel mileage i can out of my truck. It is stock right now, what should I consider doing with the engine?
Intake & carb will clean up some of the mess and give you more power. You should also consider a timing chain and gear set, cam, and maybe a set of headers.
Dont expect much in the way of gas mileage. If you are looking for an improvement there you will be dissappointed. That is the primary trade off of these engines.

Ahh she is a big nasty big block, she cant help it if she gets thirsty...I just want to be sure she is being the best that she can.. lol
in my experience 10 is good. I have seen claims of 13 but mostly on EFI stuff. Heard a guy got 15 once just because the stars aligned right. Elevation has some effect on it.
The engine is running rough, I know I have vacume leaks, i also know that the engine is running very rich I think i am going to pull the carb which is a holly 4bbl and check it out, and fix the vacume leaks. Is there any thing else I should do?
First thing is the carb. My buddy just gave me a Holley 4bbl to check if it will fit my truck so now I have the Holley that came on the truck and an extra. Hopefully this weekend I can get it pulled off and have it rebuilt.
Replace the air filter housing. I'm going to replace the entire housing for the air filter.
Replace all the vacuum lines and fittings
Change the oil
I may drain the trannie and clean out the pan and replace all the gaskets and check the rear seal.
I'm going to drain the radiator and check it out if I need to replace it it's coming out. All the hoses and cooling system is going to be replaced.
Is something wrong with the air cleaner or do you just want a new one?
Plugs and wires are a good idea, as is cap and rotor. I hit all these when I first buy a truck unless I am able to confirm that any of them have been recently replaced.
The plugs and wires are new according to the previous owner. But I plan on pulling them after I get the running rich fixed. Or it may turn into a bigger fix than anticipated
