Just reread the owner's manual (imagine that). It states clearly that we should not rely solely on the dash icon for determining when to change the air filter. That means it is 100% restricted. When I look at my filter minder, the smaller yellow shaft is at 65% restricted, I think when it hits 75%, I will change the filter.
I am at 40,000 miles now, I am cheap but that is a pretty good change interval...and I am on a dirt road for a mile or so in dusty Tucson.
Good deal... I guess my filter doesn't need to be changed then!
I've got 93k on the orginal AF. Or I'm assume it's the original because the original owner took the truck to Ford for EVERYTHING and there's no AF listed on the Oasis and I bought the truck with 26k on the clock. Two weeks ago when I last checked the minder...it hadn't even gotten to 25% yet. I'm thinking I'm going to replace it at 100k since (A)that should be about 8 years it's been in the truck and (B) maybe I've got a bum filter minder? The truck spends allot of time on the interstate/highway...so I guess it's quite possible I don't have anything to worry about.
All of us, usually change our Air Filters too soon.
A filter that is 50% restricted is usually a better filter than a brand new one.
Some of the smaller holes are plugged, not allowing the finer dirt particles to go through.
When a properly working filter minder gets to 100%, you are starting to starve the engine of the air it needs.
Tapping the dirt out is generally frowned on by Filter Mfg's
Mine had the Air Raid set up on it when I bought it. the PO put a nylon stocking ( pantyhose ) over the outside of the filter to catch more dirt. It seemed to work pretty well. Last time I cleaned it the PH was filthy and the filter wasn't that bad.
PS. I used a hammer and 2x4 to knock the dust off just don't mention it to any one

Mud
Since the filter wasn't bad I have to assume that you used the hammer and 2x4 on the pantyhose. This gets weirder by the post!
