I have a '78 F250 4x4, came from the factory with a 351M400 it has a nearly new ignition box, I have a 300 I'm putting in it out of a '84 will the ignition box from the 351M work on the 300?
I'm FAR from needing it but I'm trying to come up with a good parts list, and I'm thinking of getting all MSD but if I can use the stock box then I'll save that money.
What does the ignition box from the '84 look like? Is it the same fender-mount style in your '78? I can't remember what year Duraspark was dropped.
If the two boxes have the same grommet color (where the wires come out), and the wires coming out are the same (meaning the color, number of wires, and how they're arranged in the 2 connectors), then they are interchangeable. If not, then they are not.
I don't have the box for the 84, I got the motor from the same guy that I got the truck and he had already pulled the motor out of the 84 and parted the 84 out.
Sorry about that, I read your post backwards. I thought you were wanting to put the '84 ignition box on your '78, but you're asking if you can use the ignition box from your '78 on the '84 300.
If the distributor on the '84 300 has one 3-terminal connector coming from it with an ORANGE, PURPLE, and BLACK wire, then that distributor will be compatible with the existing ignition box sitting on the fender of your '78.
If it doesn't, I could use the stock box by changing the distributor, correct?
Sorry if I seem like I'm asking stupid questions but I've learned backwards, I can pull all the EFI and nearly anything off my '96 but I have NEVER delt with anything like this. I'm used to picking through bundles of wires as big around as my big toe and this is like trying to read a different language for me...
