Well, the Bronco is afflicted with tragically unpredictable steering response. Wanders everywhere and needs constant correction. Had a helper crank the wheel back and forth with the engine off, so far as I could see the only slack was in the steering box.
Checked LMC and they're asking $189 for new steering gears.
I've read some good things about Redhead steering gears around here and decided to give them a call to price one of their re-engineered units. Wasn't necessarily planning to buy one today, just checking around. The feller I spoke with was great, said they had one in stock and could ship it out today. For $226 + core and $30 shipping.
Forty bucks more? Are you freaking kidding me? Yeah, I've got one on the way.
So a couple of questions. Changing the gears looks like a pretty straight forward job. Anyone have tips or tricks or SNAFUs to share?
I'm thinking I'll just get a new pitman arm from Napa? It doesn't strike as a part that would go south, but the new one's not too spendy. Kooky?
Congratulations. The pitman arm can be quite challenging to remove off the old unit. Ask Encho. Use PB Blaster, pitman arm puller when you get it out on the floor, heat, big hammer, all the muscles you got, then try again the next day is how I did it. Some hints when installing the Red Head box. 1. Disconnect the cooling tubing from the frame clamp to make it easier to reconnect the tubing. 2. Resist the urge to adjust the box. Mine was tight and kind of hard to turn for the first couple of hundred miles but breaks in and becomes perfect. 3. Throw a board across the fenders and use a ratchet strap until you get it bolted in then get the bolts really tight.
