A little bit of steering slack in my steering gear box and I've read that I should probably just replace it for a RedHead Gear, but I don't think it's too the point of replacing. So I tried to adjust the nut on top of the gear and it seems awfully tight? AmI adjusting the right thng on my gear box? Should I be looseining the nut and then turning the stem down? Any help on how to adjust the steering gear would be greatly appreciated!
The nut you are referring to is a lock nut. You must first loosen it then use a hex socket (or wrench) to turn the adjustment bolt. Turn the adjustment nut no more the 1/8 to 1/4 turn. Tighten the lock nut down making sure you keep the adjustment bolt from turning. Take it for a test drive and if need be adjust it again 1/8 to 1/4 turn. Repeat as necessary making sure NOT to go to tight or the steering box will get notchy and you'll run the risk of damaging the steering box.
