92 4.9 hesitation issues

I have a 92 f150 with a 4.9 i6 in it with and e40d trans. after rebuilding my engine and reinstalling it my truck hesitates when taking off from a stop and i have very little throttle response. ive replaced the fuel pressure regulator, wires, plugs, cap, rotor, fuel filter, and checked all of my vaccum hoses. the weird thing is though that when i am using my front tank of gas the hesitation is extremely bad and i have to actually pump my gas pedal from a stop to get going but when i use my rear tank the hesitation is only slight but it is still there. I know i need to replace a faulty check valve in my front tank because i am getting cross flow from the rear to the front but i dont know what else to do. I guess im just hoping its not my trans.

Start by checking the fuel pressure from each tank. I assume you pulled the SPOUT when setting the base timing?

Put a fuel pressure gauge on the fuel rail. Check the pressure at idle, then pull the vacuum line off the fuel pressure regulator, recheck the pressure.

The SPOUT needs to be removed to set the base timing. With it out the computer no longer controls the timing. If you tried to set the timing with the SPOUT in, you most likely have the timing retarded by quite a few degrees. On the V8 trucks the SPOUT is near the ignition control module on the driver's side fender. Not sure on your I6, most likely in the same spot.

This is written for V8 trucks, but the process is the same for your truck: Ford Fuel Injection » Setting the timing

Okay. I know we definitely didn't disconnect the spout. Disconnect spout, rotate engine to correct timing, and reset the distributor ?

Attach a timing light, disconnect the SPOUT, start the engine, loosen then turn the distributor to the proper base timing. Shut off the engine, tighten the distributor, remove the timing light, re-install the SPOUT.

Okay. I'll make sure to check fuel pressure too. I sure hope this is it. This truck has been giving me trouble since I got it. Thanks a lot.

Although, wouldn't my truck idle rough if my timing was off? It idles fine its just when I ease on the gas from a stop that it wants to bog down

The engine will not necessarily idle or run rough with retarded timing. The typical symptom is lack of power and low vacuum.

Thanks for the feedback! Glad to see you found the root cause and fixed it.
