I recently purchased a 94 explorer XLT 4.0L automatic. I have fixed all of the real problems, except for one......When I shift into reverse It makes a loud "thunk". It isn't crazy loud, but enough that it stands out as being abnormal. It jerks the whole truck and is less when you put the brakes on firmly before shifting. It is also less intense when in 4x4.
I have checked the u joints and suspension components and they are fine. I replaced the spider gears in the rear differential and it is seemingly in great working order. It may be worth noting that it shifts smoothly but pretty firm in other gears.
I heard that it may be as simple as a vacuum modulator. Any ideas?????
