My wifes 01 SPort Trac once in a while would throw a code for a small EVAP leak and it has eluded me for a while. It would mainly come on after filling the tank with gas. I finally found it. It is the vent tube from the gas tank to the fill neck. Where the rubber tube connects to the metal fill tube, it has play. The rubber tube is shot because it is really hard and stiff. So I want to replace it, but not sure what to use? Or what size it is? It looks like 3/4" heater hose, but since it comes in contact with fuel, I'm not sure if thats okay to use or if I have to use hose made for fuel?
The correct answer is probably to use hose that is intended for fuel, but if it's not too difficult to get to and the hose correct hose is expensive from an OEM source, you could try heater hose and then just keep an eye on it.
If it will require dropping the tank to change, then it's probably worth it for you to get the correct OEM replacement hose or check you phone directory for a custom hose shop in your area that may have fuel hose in that size.
I was able to actually get hose at a local Autozone (I never would have guess they carry actually parts and not just ricer parts) It was a 19/32 hose. Had to lube up the end that goes on the gas tank. I did not have to drop the tank, the fill and vent both come out the back of the tank. Just dropped the spare and it took about 5 minutes to swap out.
I will say this, we were wondering why the sport trac seemed to be going thru alot of gas. This was the main reason why.
Glad it worked out for you. For others that may be getting the small evap code, sometimes it's as simple as putting on a new gas cap.
That was the first thing I did when it was throwing the small EVAP code. I think some of the issue with the vent tube hose is the damn ethanol they put in the gas. It does affect rubber in bad ways.
