Sooo, no work because of thunder storms. I worked on the truck trying to find the best timing.

The original marks line up perfectly and run horribly. It barely runs while cold and on the road I can't get past 30 while dumping smoke.

I decreased the timing (maybe?) by twisting the IP so that the IP line is a millimeter to the left of the engine timing mark and it runs slightly better.

How far can I turn this pump before I do damage?

Rotating the top of the pump toward the pass side advances it. You should have a mark/line/scribe at the top of your timing cover that is a reference. By moving the pump so it is to the pass side of the mark, it is advancing. From your description, timing is obviously off. The IDI engines will be noisy and rattle when timing is set right, that is normal. Excessive smoke is not normal. It takes a little while to purge all the air out of the system, air causes light grey smoke color. After about 15 minute driving you should be all clear of any air.

heh it wasnt to bad to change ip and injectors just had to have good weather and all the tools.... stupid 12pt sockets and a fiew other odd bits made mine drag out.

heh id say the only hard part is between keeping my knees from going to jelly while leaning all the way in for the back injectors and getting the ip + lines in/out took a bit to find just the right twist on it to get them out.
