Well my idi had to pass emissions for it to get registered. Its last emissions test will be in 2013 then it is exempt. So i took it to the emissions place and they put it on a loaded dyno, they then test the smoke opacity. The limit is 20% so your truck has to be pretty screwed up not to pass. Anyway mine was at 2.9% opacity. Did i really have to pay someone $20 when i could of told the dmv that. They also had to verify my vin number so i can get it registered, aka make sure i'm not bsing about what it says on the door sticker. Either way it is a joke. Funny thing is when i was in the waiting room, which is separated from the shop i heard my ole idi running! It sounded nice. Also talked to this nice man in the waiting room. Sounded like his truck was all messed up.
Most all of the emissions testing is just a make-work program. I had to get mine tested here before I could register it being from out of state. Diesels are exempt from the annual testing, except the first time to verify it is a diesel and that it does not smoke too much. The test was rev it to 2000 rpms and the technician decided if it had too much smoke! I passed easily, but what a crock for a test. No sniffer or other measurement instrument, just visual.
Oh wow that is crazy. They do use instruments here. I couldn't confirm nor disprove that but it was on a dyno i could hear it in the waiting room. Loudest thing in the shop, and it wasn't the exhaust. I wasn't there in person to see it. Had to give them my keys, and they drove it around the shop to test it and drove it back. We have to get tested every two years, and the next time will be this trucks last as it will then be exempt.
wow....emissions testing XD! I am shocked....if you come to MT and ask bout that at the DMV they look at you with either the head tilt to one side or like they do at napa when you say i need a CDR valve or something, basically....like your a moron lol.
Welcome to big government via the EPA! You are feeling the pain from being run over by the liberal political machine. In TX, Diesels only need a safety inspection but I know in the more liberal states, they have to pass emissions. I have a 2003 Sentra and almost every year it fails safety or emissions for some unbelievably stupid reason. It's a waste. I say if you can drive it into the shop and the lights and brakes work, who cares about anything else?
Oh, emissions testing is on a per county basis here. Usually only the metro areas have it. AKA, where the libs hang out.

Actually the EPA does air testing on a regular basis if the tests fail so many times then that county has to start doing the emissions testing for everything registered in that county
Fortunately for me I don't live in Travis county I am not sure how that impacts Diesels .

It is still the federal government implementing policy on the state level. In my opinion, the EPA is more of a hindrance than a help.
Oh, and they probably test the air at a bus stop in the middle of the DFW airport just like how global warming is based off the temperature of asphalt parking lots next to industrial A/C condensers.
