Consider the vss contol module also.

Thanks for all the help. I have changed the vss no change. Your right the rear lube was a waste. I hope the Ford guy finds something, I go to him tomorrow. Love this forum lots of good guys and girls to bounce ideas off of.

After replacing the sensor, you may need to disconnect the battery for 30+ minutes for the 'puter to reset and recognize the new sensor. I know my 'puter knows when I've just disconnected and reconnected the sensor with the ignition off. ABS light stays on for 30 seconds till it figures out all is still OK. Maybe try the disconnect again and see if you get the first 10 miles problem free again?

I think the reason for changing the diff oil is to remove any metal shavings which could be disrupting the sensor from picking up the tone ring properly.

When you drain the diff, you also need to clean out the bottom of the pumpkin or you won't get all the metal shavings. Rubbing a magnet around the bottom can be an extra help too. If you didn't clean the metal out carefully, it got flung around again. Maybe check the sensor, post old change to see if metal shavings are on it again. That could tell you something.

The diff cleaning has helped out more than a few on the forum to solve the problem. Then again...it could be something else still.

I have also heard others report misfires not registering codes early on but there can still be a coil pack going bad.

Please report back the solution. I am curious.

I doubt very much if anyone has corrected the problem by simply changing the diff oil. Even a lot of metal in the oil is not enough to fool the sensor, I'm sure they made other changes also.

Do you have a lift installed or have you had any front end work done? I've seen the front ABS cables get stretched which can cause intermittent problems - usually ending in an actual failure. I'm surprised you're getting a constant light with no actual code being set.
I'd check and clean your front wheel speed sensor connections in addition to what has already been suggested.

I never blamed you for asking a question or said it wasn't a certain thing, I just said it wasn't the differential oil. I don't expect everyone to be a mechanic and you probably accel in another field where I would be lame. I know first hand that vehicle problems can be overwhelming and we are all just here to help.

No, don't keep it to yourself! We need people like you in here. Anyone that does something 8 hours a day is going to have 100 times the experience of the layman. It's like a plumber telling an electrician how to wire a breaker panel. (being serious here).

Glad you got it resolved. Do you know if they did any specific troubleshooting to get to those 2 coils?

FWIW, when I installed my HID's I got the same problem you have. I moved the ballast for the drivers side over about 6 inches and that took care of the problem. Don't know if that will help.

Glad you got it resolved. It seems our X's have very specific problems/resolutions and if you troll this forum frequently enough, you'll see the trends of what is usually the simplest most effective fix. Enjoy driving your trouble free X!

Thanks everyone. I love this big old truck and I plan on keeping it going for a long time. By the way tdappleman. He just hooked it up to ford scanner and said I had a few hundred misfires. I checked the resistance of the questionable coils and the 2 were different than the other 8 not by much. I had 4 brand new coils so I put them all on the passenger side from rear up. As you know that side is a PITA to get to. LOL Runs like a scared rabbit.
Dave

P.S. hope I never have to change those plugs again. Took me a few hours a day over 3 days. I let them sit in Kroil overnight.

On that right rear side; I took 2 brackets off (just a few easy bolts), they were to the throttle and an ac control, I also twisted off the tube going to the injector intake, pushed the remaing hoses etc out of the way, un-did all the injector and cop wires back there and tucked them out of the way, removed the cops and boots, put the carefully chosen extension in the rear hole, and in a few minutes the plugs were out. The 10 minutes of prep here saved a ton of frustration.

Just in case some people are wondering, here is a video of mine doing the same exact thing. I changed my VSS and problem solved. But if this video helps anyone understand any better than I'm glad to help.
