Painting brake calipers

Because I'm a cheap *****, I want to paint my front calipers and drums(but the drums are not the problem). My question is, do I have to re-bleed the brakes if I take the calipers off to paint them if I pinch the rubber line? I'd be doing this by myself so if it has to be re-bled how does that work by yourself?

Yes, you will have to bleed them if you take them off the hose.
They make bleeders so 1 man can bleed the system. I have one, its like a hand suction pump and a resevoir.
Open brake resevoir, add vac to bleed screw, open scew, pump for vac. Add fluid as needed.

The MityVac is one of those" one man bleeders" and more.

Mityvac is available at many tool places and JC Whitney. I bought mine maybe 10+ years ago and it was something like $70(deluxe model) but I use it for lots of things, like vacuum testing on the engine(EGR, etc), pumping small amounts of fluid(brake bleeding, pumping out the master cylinder, emptying differentials without pulling the gasket), starting siphons and so on.

Makes bleeding the brakes fairly easy.

one note, I have read that ABS brakes require the engine to be running and someone applying the brakes since you need to activate the pump to bleed it. Otherwise you can bleed the rest of the system by yourself.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

The MityVac is actually the one I have too. Forgot the name until I read it.

You don't have to get the ABS pump to activate during the typical brake bleeding.
IF you allow air into the system enough so that it reaches the ABS pump, then you need a scanning tool to activate the solenoids within the unit to get all the air out of the ABS pump.
