Has anyone had problems with the wheels breaking on an F250 King Ranch? These are the 5 spoke wheels used in 2006. I have 117,000 miles on the truck (bought it brand new) and both front wheels have cracked within the last month. I noticed the first one about 2 days after I ran over a deer and though it seemed strange that would break a wheel, I figured that was probably the cause. Now a month later, I feel a shake in the truck and find out the other front wheel has cracked right where the bead of the tire meets the rim.
I am curious to see if anyone else has had this happen with this particular wheel.
i know its been a few months but i have an 06 and i too have cracked a couple of wheels... the 20" 5 spoke wheels... the first one about 2008 and the other last week... im very annoyed because the first one ford left me hanging saying its my fault and this one im going after new wheels
I learned a couple things along the way.....
The tire shop that changed my wheels for me said that what happened is no all that uncommon with large diameter wheels and lower profile tires. There's just not as much cushion if you hit something and the wheel winds up taking a beating.
The other thing they told me was to always use the inflation pressure the tire manufacturer recommends and not the rating on the door sticker of the truck. In my case I think it was 45psi on the door while the rating on the tire said 80psi. (This was with the original equipment Goodyear tires)
The reason for this is that the car company specs the pressure for things like ride, noise and handling. Inflating to less than the tire's rating allows the tire to flex more which causes excess or greater than normal "movement" on the rim. That wears down the seating area until it becomes thin enough to break. I would say that the thickness of my old rim that broke was almost half what the thickness of the replacement rim was.
